Drug abuse refer to the addiction of illegally taking drugs. An associated term with the same is illegal trafficking of drugs which includes cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. Drugs have ruined the lives of many. It being an addiction couldn't be get over with easily and so people spend a large financial fortune to acquire drugs. In addition to this, drugs are harmful for both body and mind, keeping the person in a state of hallucination.

In recent times one of the most concerning situations majorly related to the youth is the upsetting increase in consumption of drugs, these drugs can range from depressants like heroin and sleeping pills to hallucinogens like ecstasy and LSD which causes paranoia and in extreme cases even depression.Prescription drugs, originally meant for pain relief can also be damaging if used excessively .
Drug addiction is a double edged sword not only does it disrupt ones social relations but also takes a toll on their mental and physical health. It makes them prone to problems like depression and anxiety. It is also detrimental to our organs as it causes heart complications, liver disease and kidney dysfunction. Illegal trafficking of drugs is a key factor to the uncontrollable number of cases. Drug traffickers take advantage of the vulnerability of drug abuse victims to cause widespread terror.

Drugs have the power to ruin lives, to destroy families, and to decimate international relations. From the micro to the macro, the global substance trade is a toxic circulation that sweeps unsuspecting participants into its web every day. In an effort to shed light on the darkness of this international cancer, the United Nations has declared June 26th to be the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The date was chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong province, China around the time of the First Opium War.
Over the last couple of decades, drug consumption has become one of the gravest problems affecting the children and youth of the country.
The Narcotics Control Bureau is the nodal agency for drug law enforcement in India. It coordinates among various central and state agencies that are engaged in drug law enforcement and assist the states in their efforts to combat drugs. It also conducts a multitude of activities and programmes to raise awareness among the public about the harmful effects of drug abuse. The event hopes to raise awareness of the problems illegal drugs pose for societies across the globe.

The field addressing the world drug problem has been “plagued” by the misinformation of many kinds. Theme for 2020 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking “Better Knowledge for Better Care” emphasizes the need to improve the understanding of the world drug problem and how in turn, better knowledge will foster greater international cooperation for countering its impact on health , governance and security.
